San Jose, CA: Metropolitan Education District (MetroED) is proud to announce that Silicon Valley Career Technical Education’s (SVCTE) Fashion Design and Textile Art program has been selected as one of the top five recipients of the esteemed 2024 Glenn Hoffmann Exemplary Award Program, given by the Santa Clara County School Boards Association (SCCSBA). This is one of SVCTE’s many model programs we highlighted during CTE Month. Named after the former county superintendent (1967-1984), these awards exemplify Dr. Hoffmann’s strong belief in educational leadership as the key factor in educational reform. The district will be presented with its award on May 8 at an awards dinner at MetroED.
“On behalf of SCCSBA, congratulations on an outstanding program that exemplifies putting students first and excellence in education,” stated Isabel Jubes-Flamerich, chairwoman of the Hoffmann Exemplary Awards Committee and president of the Sunnyvale School Board of Education.
Launched in 2013, the Fashion Design and Textile Art program has rapidly become a cornerstone of educational innovation in Santa Clara County. With an emphasis on hands-on learning and real-world applications, the program equips students with the skills and knowledge needed to thrive in the competitive fashion industry. By leveraging a 21st-century STEAM framework for college and career readiness, it offers a comprehensive curriculum where students explore various art mediums, including illustration, graphic design, screenprinting, and cosmetology, while honing their sewing and pattern-making skills.
“We are thrilled to receive the Glenn Hoffmann Exemplary Award Program, which celebrates the dedication and ingenuity of our students and instructors,” Superintendent Alyssa Lynch said. “This recognition affirms our commitment to providing high-quality education and empowering students to pursue their passions and achieve their professional goals.”
Notably, the program has achieved remarkable success in student outcomes by doubling student enrollment since its inception in 2013. Last year alone, 96 percent of students earned a certificate of competency, 43 earned UC “a-g” credit, with 41 students earning college credit. The program also boasts one of the lowest attrition rates among all CTE programs at MetroED. The program is committed to promoting diversity and inclusion within the fashion industry. Twenty-two percent of its students are male, exceeding the state benchmark for non-traditional student enrollment.
Alumni have also achieved remarkable success in the fashion and arts sectors. Former student Isabella Leong showcased her designs at Los Angeles Fashion Week 2023 and now has her own clothing line in Macy’s stores. Another alum, Oscar Arreola, is a project coordinator who launched his own apparel line and interned at Webcor Builders. Recent graduate Sarah Enzminger specializes in costume design after completing her bachelor of arts degree in theater at the University of California Los Angeles.
